Meadow News for the Week of October 20, 2025

Shake Off

Message from Mrs. Haugen

Emergency Preparedness is a priority for us all at Meadow--daily safety as well as "big event" levels of safety.  Last week was our Great California Shake Out Disaster Drill. For the Waugh School District, this is an opportunity for all staff on campus to practice their roles through a simulated emergency scenario.  Here at Meadow, we began with an earthquake drill, then a building evacuation.  Our Incident Command was set up while all students were accounted for, and supervision of students was established.  Search and Rescue began systematically checking buildings, and when they found two intentionally staged, injured students, Mobile Rescue came to support.  First Aide addressed the "broken leg" and "head injury."  Mrs. Haugen invited a few parents to help Student Release practice our new student reunification system with families.  In about 40 minutes, the whole drill was wrapped up, and students returned to class to debrief.  You can see more about our new student reunification system further in this post.  Drills like this one give us all the experience and confidence to keep our students safe in case of an actual emergency.
Red Ribbon Week dates back to 1988 as a national drug awareness program.  Here at Meadow, we focus on students making healthy choices for their bodies and minds.  Student Council is hosting two spirit days this week.  Wear your sports gear for Sports Day on Thursday, and Wear Red on Friday.  Our campus is decorated with red ribbons tied to posts, lightpoles, and trees as a reminder to make healthy choices.

Standard Reunification Method:

Student Release due to an emergency at school

We have adopted a new process to reunify students with their aduShake Offlts after an emergency on campus.  From the I Love U Guys Foundation, the Standard Reunification Method ensures that every student is safely and accurately released to their authorized adult.

Here's how it works:
* You will get a notification that Student Release is beginning and a location to start the process.  Please bring ID.
* When you arrive, head to the red coned area to be greeted and fill out a Reunification Card.
* Next, proceed to the yellow coned area for Check-in, where staff will verify that you are authorized to pick up your student.
* Finally, move to the green coned area for Reunification, where a staff member will bring your student to you.
During our recent disaster drill, we put this new system into practice. Staff appreciated the checks and balances that ensured every student was accounted for, and parents noted that the process was logical and organized. While we hope to never need a full reunification in a real emergency, it’s reassuring to know that we have a clear, well-vetted, nationally recognized system in place.

THANK YOU for an awesome Halloween Carnival.  Thanks to our sixth grade students and families for volunteering, running games and hosting the costume contest.  Thanks to all of our community members for donations of time, energy and items! Thank you to the set up crew who arrived early to ensure a spooky and engaging carnival.  Thanks to the food folks who kept us full of hot dogs, nachos and caramel apples! And our attendees--we hope you had a great time! Kudos to the clean up crew for seeing it through to the end--Meadow clean and tidy and all items back at Corona Creek.  And of course, the Waugh PTO who led the way.  YOU ARE WAUGHSOME!  How lucky are we to be a part of such a dedicated, student-centered community!?!
